Come join our Four Seasons Family! We are hiring for a Jr Sommelier! This is an excellent opportunity for individuals seeking to advance their wine careers in the hospitality and food & beverage industry.

The Jr Sommelier is an essential member of the Food & Beverage team dedicated to providing exceptional quality and service to our guests. The Four Seasons Napa Valley is looking for a Jr Sommelier who shares a passion for excellence and who infuses enthusiasm into everything they do.

BASIC PURPOSE: The JR Sommelier is responsible to create wine lists, order wines and maintain and rotate wine stock. Provide wine suggestions to go with particular types of food, based on their knowledge of wine pairing, or suggest wines based on guests' taste preferences. Assist with food and beverage services, taking order and delivering of all orders throughout the restaurant when needed. Respond to all interactions in an efficient, courteous and professional manner to achieve maximum customer satisfaction. Comply with all Four Seasons’ policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNTIONS:

  • Maintaining accurate beverage program: wine list updates, POS system, etc.
  • Training the staff on beverage program, across all Food & Beverage outlets.
  • Train, evaluate, lead, motivate, coach, and discipline employees in the Resort’s
  • Main Restaurant to ensure that established cultural and core standards are met.
  • Organize, direct and control the work of employees in the Resort’s Main Restaurant.
  • Ensure maximum guest satisfaction through providing exceptional service and attention to guests and colleagues alike.
  • Running the shift as a manager on duty when necessary, completing all necessary opening and closing procedures.
  • Manage wine cellar, including proper receipt, storage, inventory and ordering of beverage products.
  • Develop and maintain controls for beverage costs in order to maximize profitability (this may also include food & labor costs).
  • Providing reports and analytics on beverage sales & costs.
  • Participating in regular staff meetings to keep employees informed of hotel policies and changes as well as ways to increase sales and service.
  • Hosting events and tastings for guests.
  • Performing other tasks or projects as assigned by hotel management and department needs.
  • Take steps to remedy any inventory, sales forecast, and budget discrepancies.
  • Work the floor of the restaurant, helping guests select the appropriate beverage selections for their meal, and serving the guests.
  • Provide professional beverage service, not limited to correct service temperature, glassware and attitude.
  • Encourage and foster staff development, including providing information on outside educational opportunities.
  • Develop educational material focused on wine knowledge, proper service, and professional standards for staff across all Food & Beverage areas.
  • Maintain excellent beverage knowledge, not limited to wine through educational activities and professional relationship building within the wine-industry.
  • Communicate effectively with F&B employees and managers on a daily basis. Comply with Four Seasons’ Category One and Category Two Work Rules and Standards of Conduct as set forth in EmPact.
  • Work harmoniously and professionally with co-workers, supervisors, and outside contacts.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assists with responsibilities and duties in the absence of or due to heavy volume in the restaurant and bar/lounge areas and not limited to only wine service.
  • Assist guests throughout the Resort where needed in their role of Sommelier Solid interpersonal and relationship-building skills to work with cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to prepare and deliver reports, effective presentations.
  • Work in a safe, prudent and organized manner.
  • Assist other F&B outlets. Assist with the service of food to guests.
  • Assist in making dining reservations and seating of guests.
  • Ensure proper table set-up and make minor adjustments as needed.
  • Assist with set-up and cleaning of operational areas.
  • Assists with responsibilities and duties in the absence of or due to heavy volume in other areas of the Resort Perform other tasks or projects as assigned by management.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Education:

  • College degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management or Beverage Management preferred.

  • Certified wine and beverage education through CMS, WSET and other preferred.

Experience:

  • Required at least 2-3 years’ experience in a similar role or equivalent.

  • Required strong knowledge of Napa Valley and surrounding areas.

  • Require a working technical knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and all corporate policies and procedures.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Must be flexible with schedule- Able to work weekdays, weekends, holidays, evening/overnight shifts.

  • Excellent reading, writing and oral proficiency in the English language.

  • Previous fine dining experience required.

  • Computer literate in Word, Excel, POS systems.

  • Elaborate knowledge of wine, beer, & spirits.

  • Understanding of beverage costs and how to run a beverage program is required.

  • Ability to read, write and speak English and ability to understand professional terms in needed languages (Italian, Spanish, German, French and more).

  • Ability to multi-task in a high volume and demanding environment.

  • Strong problem-solving skills, ability to handle difficult situations.

  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
