Position Summary

Our Controller manages the accounting department and systems so that they accurately reflect the financial position of Don and Sons. Ensures accurate internal and external recording and reporting of financial transactions. Oversees budgeting, general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, fixed asset management, etc. Maintains Department policy and procedures to ensure that accounting activities are in accordance with established legal, regulatory, and the Company’s requirements. Advises senior management.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Control of Actual Figures in Financial Statements (P&L Balance Sheet & Cash Flow)

  • Oversees the Accounting operations ensuring accuracy, consistency and efficiency throughout each transactional process
  • Monitors the Month End Close Process to ensure the accurate and timely production of all Financial Statements
  • Ensures compliance with GAAP
  • Controls the AR invoicing process and ensures proper & timely collections
  • Manages the Accounts Payable process focusing on cash management
  • Manages daily cash flow to ensure availability of all cash accounts and LOCs; provides timely reports to senior management.
  • Manages the accurate & consistent flow of GL mapping into the Financial Statements
  • Ensures the accuracy of all Financial Statements
  • Provides a framework whereby a culture of control exists throughout the organization
  • Checks and challenges the results of operational managers financial reports
  • Challenges management on procurement that varies from the structured policies

Reporting & Analysis

  • Commits to provide accurate and timely Financial Statements to internal users by the 10th workday of each month
  • Monitors the completion and review of all external Financial Statements and Reports required by third-party agreements
  • Analyzes budget-to-actual results of all costing including review of special project budget-to-actual reports for compliance with budgets
  • Provides support for the preparation of the Annual Operating Budget
  • Coaches management team to monitor their budget compliance
  • Provides quick and direct feedback to management team regarding their budget to actual accountability

Internal Controls & Audit

  • Manages the external annual financial audit and relationship with outside auditor
  • Prepares and/or reviews all necessary audit schedules
  • Manages all tax planning and compliance, including external tax preparer
  • Monitors all outstanding audit issues, challenging for auditor understanding when necessary, or ensuring correction, documentation and adoption into the normal accounting practice when necessary
  • Continually improves the internal controls and policy and procedural documentation
  • Monitors and ensures compliance with internal fiscal control guidelines and procedures
  • Ensures total accuracy and adequate documentation as well as a formalized archiving process
  • Develops mechanism to keep Accounting Team and management aware of accounting changes that may affect firm's ability to achieve desired business results

Treasury Management

  • Maintains appropriate bank accounts
  • Manages Bank relationships
  • Monitors loan compliance and reporting internally and externally
  • Ensures bank flows and treasury management is completed in the most efficient way
  • Utilizes on-line banking for ACH and Transfers, etc.

Contract Compliance

  • Maintains legal files for all contracts
  • Reviews and monitors contract compliance for all contracts

System Integrity

  • Proposes system upgrades and optimization when necessary
  • Ensures the accounting transactional system is appropriate for the business needs
  • Ensures the payroll system is secure and fits the unique business needs
  • Ensures the reporting/analysis system is maintained and updated weekly with accurate GL data
  • Monitors the security and backup of all systems

Staff and Management Development

  • Supervises the Production Accountant Analyst and the Accounting Team
  • Develops each team member to prepare them for the next step of their career
  • Encourages internal and external training courses to improve the overall knowledge
  • Monitors employee satisfaction to maintain low turnover

Job Qualifications

Knowledge and Experience:

  • A bachelor's degree in accounting and at least seven to ten years progressive accounting experience is required. A CPA or MBA is highly desirable
  • Advanced knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles
  • Proficiency in G/L accounting software (Microsoft Navision preferred), Essbase, Word, Excel, Microsoft Outlook; Access (special attention to understanding spreadsheet development)
  • Strong analytical skills to read and interpret variances in financial results
  • A demonstrated ability to lead effectively and ethically
  • Accuracy, attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines while operating in a fast paced, time constrained environment
  • Ability to manage multiple projects & negotiate competing priorities
  • Ability to participate in making decisions and able to spend time on routine items that are mission critical
  • Supervisory experience

Physical Requirements

  • Must be capable of lifting up to 35 pounds up and over their head
  • If asked to drive a company vehicle, must have a valid California Driver’s License, be insurable by the company and be able to operate a motor vehicle safely
  • Must be able to travel
